Sad for no reason

You wake up feeling heavy, and nothing in particular has happened. Everything in your life seems “fine,” and yet there's a sadness in your chest and you don't know where it came from. If that's how you feel, you're not strange and you're not ungrateful; many people everywhere go through this.

Not knowing the reason doesn't mean there isn't one

Sometimes tiredness builds up quietly: too little sleep, long-term stress, a loneliness we haven't admitted, or an old sadness we never gave ourselves time for. Feelings don't come with a sign explaining their cause.

And sometimes the body plays a part: changing seasons and less sunlight, or health changes that affect mood. So don't blame yourself for a sadness you don't understand.

Questions that may help you understand

  • When did this feeling start? Did anything change in your life before it, even something small?
  • How have your sleep, eating and movement been in recent weeks?
  • Is there something you're avoiding thinking about?
  • Does the sadness ease at certain times, or around certain people?

Small steps for today

  • Get outside into the light and fresh air for ten minutes, even just in front of your door.
  • Write down how you feel without trying to explain it. Sometimes the reason shows up on paper.
  • Do one small thing you've been putting off, and give yourself credit when it's done.
  • Tell one person: “I'm not okay today, and I don't know why.” You don't need to explain more.

When do you need more than this?

If the sadness lasts more than two weeks on most days, you've lost interest in things you used to enjoy, or your sleep and appetite have changed a lot, talk to a doctor or a mental health professional. That isn't overreacting; it's care you deserve.

Write what you can't explain

On “i am sad” you don't need a reason. You write what you feel as it is, with no name, and people from all over the world read it and reply to you in your language. Many of them have felt this same unexplained sadness.
